McDonald’s Australia is bringing back Diet Coke after almost four years, reversing its decision to remove the sugar-free soft drink from restaurants in January 2023.

The fast-food chain has confirmed that Diet Coke is being reintroduced nationwide, with the rollout already underway and more restaurants expected to receive the drink over the coming months.

The returning beverage will also be available as an option with McDonald’s meal deals, allowing customers to choose Diet Coke alongside their burgers, fries and other menu items.

Diet Coke Returns to McDonald’s Restaurants Across Australia

McDonald’s has confirmed that Diet Coke is returning in response to customer demand, with the company acknowledging requests from Australians who wanted the drink back.

The rollout is taking place progressively rather than through a single nationwide launch.

Some restaurants may already have Diet Coke available, while others will introduce it as the distribution process continues over the coming months.

The return marks a significant reversal for McDonald’s, which removed Diet Coke from its Australian beverage range in early 2023.

Unlike a temporary promotional drink, Diet Coke is being restored to the regular menu, with no limited-time promotional period announced.

Diet Coke Will Be Available with McDonald’s Meal Deals

Customers will be able to select Diet Coke as their meal drink once it becomes available at their local McDonald’s restaurant.

That means the returning beverage can be ordered alongside eligible menu combinations, including meals featuring the Big Mac, Quarter Pounder, McChicken and other burgers.

The change also expands the chain’s sugar-free soft drink selection, giving customers another option alongside Coca-Cola Zero Sugar.

During the rollout, customers can check the MyMacca’s App or their restaurant’s ordering menu to see whether Diet Coke has been added to the available drinks.

Availability will depend on when individual restaurants receive the product.

Why McDonald’s Removed Diet Coke in 2023

McDonald’s Australia removed Diet Coke from its menu on January 11, 2023, as part of a review of its beverage range.

At the time, the company pointed to changing customer preferences and growing demand for other sugar-free drinks.

Customers were encouraged to choose alternatives already on the menu, including Coca-Cola Zero Sugar and Sprite Zero Sugar.

However, Diet Coke and Coca-Cola Zero Sugar are not identical products.

Although both are sugar-free, Diet Coke has its own distinct flavour, while Coca-Cola Zero Sugar is formulated to deliver a taste closer to regular Coca-Cola.

The difference mattered to customers who specifically preferred Diet Coke and continued asking McDonald’s to bring it back.

Its return comes approximately three years and nine months after the original removal.

When Will Diet Coke Be Available at Your Local McDonald’s?

Diet Coke is rolling out across Australian McDonald’s restaurants now, with availability expected to expand over the coming months.

The chain is introducing the drink progressively, meaning customers may find it at one restaurant before another nearby location has received its stock.

The easiest way to check is through the MyMacca’s App, by viewing the available beverages for a selected restaurant, or by asking staff directly.

Once introduced, Diet Coke will be available as a standalone beverage and as an eligible drink choice with McDonald’s meal deals.

The return restores an option that has been missing from the Australian menu since January 2023, giving Diet Coke fans their preferred soft drink back alongside McDonald’s regular food range.
